Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, but an estimated 80 percent of lung cancers could be cured if detected at an early stage. It is responsible for more deaths annually than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. Lung cancer is second only to heart disease in the number of deaths caused annually.
CT scans are easy and painless and could save your life because they can detect lung cancer at an early stage, when it is most treatable.
A person is considered high risk for lung cancer if they:
- Are between 55–77 years old
- Are a current smoker, or have quit within the last 15 years
- Smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or two packs of cigarettes a day for 15 years
