Our knowledgeable care team offers support and attention to help you feel comfortable and confident at every stage.
Commonwealth Health is dedicated to providing expectant mothers and newborns with quality care during this special time. Our maternity services are provided by obstetricians, labor and delivery specialists, nurses and other caring professionals in a welcoming, comfortable environment. We offer a range of compassionate care for both Mom and baby, and our spacious obstetrics units are backed by Commonwealth Health’s critical care and emergency services should the need arise.
Taking Care of You and Your Baby
Commonwealth Health's care begins in the earliest stages of pregnancy, with prenatal checkups and services tailored to your specific needs. You'll learn about proper nutrition and work with your obstetrician to develop a birth plan, choose a pediatrician, and get properly prepared.
Your health and your baby’s health are of the utmost importance, and we watch over it with electronic monitoring devices that enable physicians to monitor both mother and baby, even from their offices.
Why Choose Commonwealth Health?
Commonwealth Health offers birthing services at both Moses Taylor Hospital and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) is accepted at all Commonwealth Health hospitals.
Moses Taylor Hospital was the first hospital in the United States to earn the Perinatal Care designation by The Joint Commission. This designation demonstrates our continued commitment to providing specialized high-risk pregnancy care for mothers with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and various existing medical conditions.
Moses Taylor Hospital also offers a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – with 24-hour access to an in-house neonatologist. The NICU is designed to enable more control of artificial and natural lighting, as well as significant noise reduction to lower an infant’s stress levels. Private rooms are uniquely designed to suit the needs of premature or critically ill newborns, and specialized monitoring technology enables staff to continually observe every infant’s condition.
As a Level III NICU, we care for newborns with severe and complex illnesses, with access to a range of pediatric specialists who are on hand to provide care. We specialize in the management of:
- Severely premature infants
- Complications of pregnancy, labor and delivery
- Complex birth defects and genetic syndromes
- Gastrointestinal, kidney or respiratory disorders
- Infections or sepsis
- Major neonatal surgical care
Moses Taylor Hospital also offers:
- 24/7 access to two in-house OB physicians
- 24/7 access to a Pediatric Hospitalist from Penn State Hershey

Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is a designated BlueCross BlueShield Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care. This designation shows our commitment to providing quality care, treatment expertise and better overall patient results.
