Healthy Halloween Indulgences
Halloween means spooky decor, creative costumes and—of course—candy. And, as you might have heard, grownups get to take a few pieces as a part of the "parent tax." Those are just the rules, right?
Parent tax or not, if you have concerns about what you're pilfering from the candy bowl or how much sugar your kids or grandkids are eating, there are healthier Halloween options. Whether you're buying candy, sorting through their trick-or-treat haul or replacing what's in the candy bowl, here are some swaps to consider:
All-natural licorice is a tasty and healthier alternative to traditional chewy candies. More sugary licorice often contains high amounts of added sugars, which may contribute to negative health effects when consumed in excess, such as tooth decay and unwanted spikes in blood sugar levels. However, versions made from licorice root may help with digestive problems.
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which can improve heart health by reducing blood pressure. However, for the best health benefits, make sure it has at least 70% cocoa to get more nutrients and natural fiber but with fewer additives.
Nut butter candies, such as almond butter, peanut butter and cashew butter cups, are great sources of healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They also can provide energy. Just opt for organic butter cups to avoid ingredients like oils and added salt or sugar.
Organic gummy bears made with real fruit juice and without artificial colors, flavors or high fructose corn syrup is the way to go. Artificial colors and flavors may cause allergic reactions and have been linked to hyperactivity in children. High fructose corn syrup also can contribute to obesity and diabetes when consumed in large amounts.
Trail mix containing nuts, seeds and dried fruit can satisfy your cravings for sweetness and crunch while providing your body with protein, fiber and antioxidants. Just avoid homemade versions from strangers. While people tampering with treats is mostly an urban legend, you don't know what ingredients they used, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
Whatever you decide to indulge in or let the kiddos eat, just remember to do it in moderation. Halloween treats with high amounts of sugar, fat and artificial ingredients can lead to cavities, blood sugar fluctuations and other health problems. And that's not the type of scare we want for you this October.
