Tunkhannock Area Seventh Grade Earns Two Lifesaving Certifications
2/7/2019
TUNKHANNOCK, Pa. (Feb. 7, 2019) – Tunkhannock Area School District honored its seventh grade students Thursday for being the first full grade level in Pennsylvania to earn certifications in two lifesaving courses. The classes were taught by Commonwealth Health officials as part of the health care network’s community outreach program.
The 175 students completed training in Heartsaver® CPR AED and Stop The Bleed. The classes were organized by Kelly Carroll, Ph.D., principal, K-7 STEM Academy, and Mary Gene Eagen, assistant superintendent, of the Tunkhannock Area School District, along with Gail Malloy, R.N., L.N.C., trauma injury prevention and outreach coordinator at Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Malloy and Ted Kross, director of the emergency department at Commonwealth Health Tyler Memorial Hospital, provided the instruction for the Stop The Bleed classes which teach students on ways to control severe bleeding.
The Heartsaver® course, which is a service of the American Heart Association, was led by Carmen Passaniti, N.R.P., pre-hospital care coordinator of Commonwealth Health Emergency Medical Services. Heartsaver CPR AED teaches adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. The students also were trained in the administration of Naloxone, a drug that rapidly reverses opioid overdose.
Members of the seventh-grade class at Tunkhannock Area Intermediate School gather at an assembly to celebrate their first in the state recognition. The class is the first full grade level in Pennsylvania to be certified in Lifesaver (R) CPR AED and Stop The Bleed.
Elected officials, members of law enforcement join Tunkhannock Area School District personnel and Commonwealth Health staff for a program honoring the district's seventh-grade class.
