Commonwealth Health’s Heart & Vascular Institute Celebrates 500th TAVR Procedure
9/28/2021
The Heart & Vascular Institute at Regional Hospital of Scranton recently celebrated the completion of their 500th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). TAVR is a catheter-based, minimally invasive procedure that can be an alternative for open-heart surgery. Patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis may be candidates for the TAVR approach.
“The Heart & Vascular Institute is proud to celebrate this milestone because it is more than a number to the team. It is improved quality of life for our patients,” said Dr. Sethi, M.D., Interventional Cardiologist. “Not only is this big for our program but for our community as well. Patients no longer have to travel out of the area to receive quality care and less invasive treatment options.”
The TAVR procedure allows a diseased aortic valve to be replaced without removing the nonfunctioning valve. It is performed in a hybrid cath-lab setting and is usually limited to a hospital stay of one day. During the TAVR procedure, an expandable valve is delivered via catheter without a median sternotomy or the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Commonwealth Health’s Heart & Vascular Institute in Scranton was the first in the area to provide this treatment option starting in 2016. The TAVR team includes highly skilled physicians, nurses, technicians and many other caregivers who support the patient through the process.
