1/31/2016
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Feb. 1, 2016) – Commonwealth Health and The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) have established the Commonwealth Health Future Physician Scholarship with a $250,000 gift from Commonwealth Health.
The scholarship will begin assisting local students this fall. The scholarship, available only to students who reside in Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wyoming counties, is designed to encourage aspiring doctors to stay in northeastern Pennsylvania to practice.
The selection will be made considering both need and merit. Each scholar will receive mentoring and advice from a Commonwealth Health physician.
The students’ Community Health Research Projects and Quality Improvement Community Collaborative projects will be conducted in the four-county area. The Community Health Research Project experience provides students with an opportunity to apply the concepts, strategies, and tools acquired through their studies to health research and to contribute to improved health in the region by conducting projects with community partners. Quality Improvement Community Collaborative projects involve TCMC second-year students in working with clinical partners throughout TCMC’s three campuses to address important healthcare quality issues.
“With the announcement of the Commonwealth Health Future Physician Scholarship we are taking proactive steps to ensure that the residents of northeastern Pennsylvania continue to have access to high quality medical care,” Cor Catena, CEO of Commonwealth Health, said. “By investing in young physicians, we are building a pipeline of skill and talent that will serve our community in the years to come.”
“TCMC’s founding vision was to prepare future physicians to live and work in northeastern and north central Pennsylvania. We are delighted that through the generosity of CHS we will be able to make that path easier for local students,” Steven J. Scheinman, president and dean of TCMC, said.
