BERWICK, Pa. (Jan. 31, 2019) -- Commonwealth Health Berwick Hospital Center contributed to the community in 2018 in many ways beyond providing quality medical care. As one of Berwick’s largest employers, we contribute to the local economy by paying property and sales taxes, providing jobs and through sponsorships and donations to local organizations and groups.
We support local vendors through purchases and services and our employees do the same. We support local organizations and events through both our participation and our financial sponsorships.
In 2018, Berwick Hospital Center provided quality care in the form of:
- More than 10,000 emergency department visits
- More than 1,000 inpatient visits
- More than 1,700 surgeries
- More than 58,000 outpatient visits
Our financial benefits to the community last year include:
- More than $1 million in capital investments
- More than $2 million paid in property and sales taxes
- More than $4 million in charity and uncompensated care
- More than $1 million spent locally
- More than $18,000 in donations and outreach contributions
Some of the highlights of the past year:
- Established an online reservation system for patients seeking urgent care for non-life threatening conditions in our emergency department
- Added the convenience of online scheduling with our primary care physicians through our InQuicker program
- Instituted MDSave which allows patients to buy services online, saving up to 60 percent on some imaging procedures
- Added primary care providers Maxell Tolan, M.D., Sugarloaf office; Rebecca Long, M.D., Berwick, and Michelle Hall, certified registered nurse practitioner, Berwick
- Added general surgeon Ryan Hawley, D.O., to our medical staff
- With other Commonwealth Health acute care hospitals, entered into a partnership with Jefferson Neuroscience Network for a stroke telemedicine program
- Received the Premier Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) Excellence in Patient Safety Award for creating a culture of patient safety and for delivery of high-quality, safe, reliable care and services
- Offered free hernia screenings and other screenings to the public at an open house
- Held a successful Mammothon in October, calling on women who were past due for their annual mammograms, scheduling this important screening
