Ambulance Services
Commonwealth Health Emergency Medical Services (CHEMS) is a full-service medical transportation provider, offering advanced lifesaving services. CHEMS serves Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming, Susquehanna, Pike and Wayne counties and is licensed to operate throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
CHEMS is headquartered in Scranton and has substations situated throughout Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming and Wayne counties. CHEMS has ambulances available in these locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, allowing for quick and responsive dispatch to a patient in need.
CHEMS provides transportation to and from hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, hospice and municipalities. CHEMS provides emergent, non-emergent and critical care ambulance services. CHEMS also provides alternative transportations services including wheelchair vans and buses. Our primary focus is providing patients with quality care while ensuring the patient is transported to the facility of choice.
Basic & Advanced Life Support
CHEMS emergency medical technicians are trained in the basic lifesaving procedures – circulation, airway management and breathing. CHEMS emergency medical technicians provide basic life support and are trained to meet all local, state and national standards. CHEMS advanced emergency medical technicians are trained and certified to all local, state and national standards. They provide the more rural communities we serve with needed and advanced life support services that can then be expanded upon with the arrival of paramedics. CHEMS paramedics are trained and certified to all local, state and national standards. They provide advanced life support services to our patients in both emergent and non-emergent settings. They carry advanced medications and are able to perform advanced procedures in the field.
Other Services
CHEMS offers wheelchair van services, bariatric transports and special events services. The CHEMS staff is trained to handle these areas and is compassionate about the level of service extended to all patients. Wheelchair van services are available in those situations where an ambulance is not required, but the patient prefers special attention not otherwise received through community transportation.
Bariatric transport vehicles are equipped with modern technology and maneuverability to help ensure quality care, comfort and service. Our special events services include a bike team and utility terrain vehicle, offering both advanced life support and basic life support services. These services are most often used at local events where the terrain makes it difficult to accommodate a vehicle such as marathons, parades and community events. Special events services can assist in any medical emergency in a prompt manner and at the same level expected of a medical transport crew.
American Heart Association Training Center
CHEMS is designated as an American Heart Association Training Center and offers ACLS, PALS and CPR classes as well as other disciplines.
