Commonwealth Health Adds Open MRI, Women’s Center in Lackawanna County
10/6/2017
DUNMORE, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2017) -- Commonwealth Health is enhancing its imaging services in Lackawanna County by offering the region’s first open magnetic resonance imaging system and establishing a center that caters exclusively to women.
The open MRI became operational in September at Advanced Imaging Services, 1000 Meade St., Dunmore, a Moses Taylor radiology location.
Also opening this fall at the Dunmore site is the Center for Women's Imaging at Advanced Imaging Specialists.
An open house and grand opening is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the new women’s center.
The open MRI is ideal for patients who experience feelings of claustrophobia or who exceed size limitations of the closed MR system, a tube-like enclosure used by health care professionals to capture images of the body that cannot be seen with other imaging methods.
The open MRI system at AIS offers physicians high-resolution image quality, allowing them to make better diagnoses.
“The system we have installed offers an unprecedented combination of clinical excellence and patient acceptance,” Justin Davis, CEO of Moses Taylor Hospital, said. “Getting this power in an open design gives us a lot of flexibility. We’re able to see more patients, give them a comfortable experience and get the most effective results from our work. This system is a tremendous diagnostic benefit to the community.”
The Center for Women's Imaging at Advanced Imaging Specialists offers a variety of imaging services exclusively for women in a comfortable, compassionate environment using the latest technology. Onsite board-certified radiologists provide fast, professional interpretation of images.
Services include:
- 3-D Mammography, a technology that helps detect breast cancer in its earliest stages when it can be easier to treat and more curable. During the three-dimensional part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds.
- Obstetric (OB) Ultrasound, which helps to estimate a due date, measure the size and monitor the growth of the baby, check for multiple births, the amount of amniotic fluid and the location and development of the placenta.
- Gynecological Ultrasound produces a picture through the use of high frequency sound waves and is useful in examining the organs in the pelvis including the uterus, ovaries, cervix and bladder.
- Breast Intervention (biopsy), the procedure in which cells from a suspicious area in the breast are removed, then examined under a microscope to determine a diagnosis. Image-guided biopsy is performed by taking samples of an abnormality under some form of guidance such as ultrasound, MRI or mammography.
